Malaysia’s transport minister, Anthony Loke has announced an update to the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system, streamlining renewals and deregistration for Singapore car owners driving into Malaysia.

From June 28, 2024, there will be more new functions that has been incorporated into the VEP portal, that would minimise the need to write in via email or go physically to any counters, said by Mr Loke.

Vehicle owners are able to renew or deregister VEPs online from the comfort of their homes or offices, which can eliminate the need for physically visits to the counters.

More personnel have also been added to manage the increase in applications. The number handling email enquiries has increased from five to 15, while at the VEP collection centre, there are now 12 people instead of seven.

From 1 August 2024, VEP holders have the option to link their credit or debit cards to their radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.

In addition, VEP holders will have to download the MDGS app through Apple App Store or Google Play Store to link their RFID tag to their payment cards.

How to register your VEP online?

Step 1: Login

Access and register the VEP online portal via Road Transport Department of Malaysia (JPJ) official website at www.jpj.gov.my

Step 2: Submit Required Documents

Upload necessary documents. You may upload the Vehicle Registration Card PDF file obtained from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) or One Motoring website.

Most of the details we require for VEP registration can be extracted from the PDF file and be auto filled into the web form. If you upload the document using a non-regular PDF format (created by scanning), then you will need to fill in all the required form fields manually.

Step 3: Confirmation

You will receive a confirmation email once your renewal is processed.

Step 4: Collection and Payment

A confirmation slip (a PDF file) will be emailed to you. You are required to bring along this document to collect your VEP tag for collection.

The VEP tag is free but there will be an administration fee of Ringgit Malaysia (MYR) 10 imposed during registration. The fee shall be paid during tag collection.

If you choose to register physically at JPJ counters in CIQ or at the premise designated by JPJ, you are required to fill in a physical form (this form can also be downloaded from JPJ website) and provide the following supporting documentation:

• Vehicle Registration Card issued by the relevant authorities

• Latest Insurance Cover Note

• Vehicle Owner’s Passport

• Driver’s Passport

• Authorisation letter (if registration is performed by third party)
