Applying for VEP and RFID tag before driving to Malaysia

13 Jun 2024

Starting from 1 Oct 2024, all foreign-registered vehicles entering Johor from Singapore must have a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) or risk being barred from entering the country, Malaysia’s Transport Ministry announced on May 28.

The VEP, which comes with a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, is meant as an “identity card” for your vehicle when you drive into Malaysia.

How do I apply for a VEP?

All motorists entering Malaysia from Singapore will need a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) or have completed the online application and received a confirmation slip, which, along with a registered Touch ’n Go card can be used until your VEP RFID tag has been activated.

Here’s the step-by-step guide on how to apply the VEP for driving to Malaysia.

Step 1: Register online at the official Malaysia VEP website

You can only register for a VEP online at the official VEP website - https://vep.jpj.gov.my

Create an account before you start the application process. This account will allow you to view any updates on the status of your application.

Step 2: Wait for confirmation email to complete the registration process

You will receive an email shortly after registration with details to enter the Malaysian VEP portal.

DO NOT log in to your account yet.

Step 3: Download Touch N’ Go eWallet

The Touch N’ Go eWallet is available to download at both Apple and Google App stores. This eWallet will be in hand as it is linked to the VEP-RFID tag upon collection. Additionally, you can use the eWallet to reload your Touch N’ Go card.

For Singaporeans, you should choose NRIC as the ID type in the Touch 'n Go eWallet. For foreigners, you should choose Passport as the ID type.

**IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DOWNLOADED IT BEFORE, SKIP TO STEP 4**

Step 4: Input Your Vehicle Information

Click on the portal link in confirmation email sent to you in Step 2. Once you are in the portal, input your personal details and vehicle information.

Here’s the information you will need:

• Vehicle’s model

• Chassis number

• Certificate of Entitlement (COE)

• NRIC & Passport details (available on Singpass app)

• Vehicle road tax documents

• Motor insurance documents

Step 5: Wait for Approval

Once your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email for your VEP-RDID Tag collection.

Step 6: Collect Your VEP-RFID Tag

There is two ways of collection — either by self collection or home delivery.

Self-Collection: You can self-collect your tag from a VEP collection counter in Johor Bahru. Do note that there is no VEP collection counters in Singapore.

Home Delivery: The tag will be delivered to address of your choice, in Singapore or Malaysia.

Applicants must pay a service fee of RM30 and a postage fee of approximately RM15 for delivery to Singapore. Sales and services tax will also apply.

There will be a processing fee of RM10 (approximately $2.86) for the tag and the VEP-RFID tag is valid for 5 years.

What should you do if you are driving a car that comes with the previous owner’s tag?

The VEP-RFID tag for the previous owner is no longer valid when the vehicle’s ownership is transferred to another individual or company.

Therefore, the new owner is required to obtain another VEP-RFID tag.

If you are encountering this issue, kindly email in to JPJ at aduanvep@jpj.gov.my with your supporting necessary documents to prove your ownership for the car for assistance to register your VEP-RFID tag.
