First announced in May this year - from Oct 1, all foreign-registered vehicles entering Johor from Singapore must have a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP).
Those without VEP can still enter Malaysia - On 27 Sep, Malaysia announced that foreign-registered vehicles that have yet to install VEP tags will still be allowed to enter the country.
A “Warning Notice” will be issued to vehicle owners upon exiting Malaysia if they have still not installed their VEP, urging them to comply with the new regulations.
Road Transport Department (JPJ) said that the enforcement will be "executed in phases”. Drivers with no VEP will be issued a reminder at the land borders to register, install and activate their radio frequency identification (RFID) tags immediately.
There is a total of 4 VEP installation centres, 3 in Johor Bahru and 1 in Singapore - located at TCSens Office in Danga Bay, RTD Southern Region Academy, Johor RTD Headquarters and VEP Collection Centre in Woodlands. Strictly by appointment-basis only.
According to the JPJ, 62,635 Singapore private vehicles have activated their RFID VEP tags.
Drivers who have yet to apply for a VEP and wish to drive into Malaysia, can register for an account at the official website: vep.jpj.gov.my.
Foreign vehicle owners who fail to comply with VEP regulations can be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed for up to six months.
