Handling a Car Breakdown Situation

18 Mar 2024

Experiencing a car breakdown in the middle of the road can be stressful and helpless. But it's important to stay calm and take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and resolve the situation as smoothly as possible.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to handle a car breakdown.

Safely Pullover

If you feel something amiss with the car while driving or notice any signs of trouble with your car (strange noises, dashboard warning lights, etc.), safely pull over and move your car to the side of the road. Do not panic and stay calm.

Warn Other Road Users

Switch on your hazard lights to alert other drivers to your presence. You should proceed to put the warning sign (red triangle) around 20 metres behind your car to signal any incoming vehicles.

Once you have stopped the car, assess the situation. Try to identify the problem if you can, but avoid attempting any repairs if you're not comfortable or if it's not safe to do so. If you're on a busy road, stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on until it's safe to exit. If you're in a safer location, exit the vehicle on the side away from traffic.

Call For Help

The next step is to call for towing services or roadside assistance. The longer you stay on the road, it can be dangerous for you and other road users as well. It is recommended to call the workshop that services your car where they will guide you and send a tow truck for you.

If your vehicle is on the expressway, the Expressway Monitory and Advisory System (EMAS) can help. Do note that they tow only to the nearest designated car parks outside the expressways.

Provide Details

When calling for help, provide your location, a description of your vehicle, and details of the problem you're experiencing. This will help the service provider send the appropriate assistance.

Prevent Future Breakdowns

After resolving the immediate situation, take steps to prevent future breakdowns by scheduling regular maintenance checks, keeping an emergency kit in your car, and staying attentive to any signs of trouble.

In the future when your car breaks down in the middle of the road, you can take note of what you can do to effectively handle a car breakdown situation and minimize stress and inconvenience.
